How can acupuncture and Chinese medicine help fertility?
TCM can improve your hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (hormonal exchange between your brain and reproductive system), boost circulation to your ovaries and uterus, and significantly reduce stress—all of which benefit your fertility.

Acupuncture helps improve fertility in many ways:

  • Improve sperm quality and motility
  • Reduce stress and anxiety associated with infertility
  • Normalizes hormone production and endocrine system
  • Improve blood flow to reproductive organs (uterus and testes)
  • Reduce chances of miscarriage
  • Reduce inflammation that can lead to infertility
  • Regulate the menstrual cycle
  • Increases pregnancy chances for women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF)

It has a proven track record for thousands of years in many conditions that enhance fertility, treat gynecological problems, increases blood circulation, reduce inflammation and pain, and promote deep tissue and cell healing. When your system runs smoothly, all of your systems work together in harmony to keep your health and wellness at their best.

Herbal

When the oldest medicines are properly prescribed by a qualified and licensed herbalist, your body can achieve amazing healing effects. Our formulas come from companies that follow strict safety guidelines. Read more about them here and here. Balancing herbal formulas is unique in that they do not force the body by blocking receptors or mimicking biochemistry, but rather gently harmonize and strengthen body systems. They are particularly effective against chronic imbalances such as infertility, diminished ovarian reserve, high FSH, endometriosis, PCOS, postpartum anxiety and depression, recurrent miscarriages, irregular cycles, and menopause problems.

Acupuncture in men can help improve sperm quality. Since sperm development takes about 90 days, it is recommended that men start weekly acupuncture treatment at least 3 months before trying to conceive. Many men continue acupuncture treatment outside of their fertility regimen to manage stress throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Women follow a treatment cycle similar to the following protocol during ovulation induction therapy which leads to IUI and IVF cycles:

1. The preparation period has two stages.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)1A. Preparation stage: Three to six months in advance: Acupuncture treatment before IVF treatment can help promote healthy blood flow to the ovaries and eggs. It also promotes overall health, improves your natural balance, and builds reserves in preparation for IVF treatment. Menstrual period (about 4-5 days) => follicular phase (including the first 1-14 days of the menstrual period) => ovulation period (on or around the 14th day) => luteal phase (about 12-14 days after ovulation). Repeat this regimen, ideally for three months or more, until enter your fertility treatment cycle.

1B. Start-up Phase: Weekly acupuncture may be appropriate one month before your IVF treatment. Acupuncture will continue to promote healthy blood flow to the ovaries as you begin the necessary medications to suppress the ovaries in preparation for stimulation.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)2. Acupuncture Protocol for IUI and Ovulation Induction Therapy Cycle

Ovulation induction is a simple fertility treatment in which a woman is prescribed medication to help eggs develop and ovulate. Often referred to as artificial insemination, IUI treatment is a simple procedure in which sperm is collected, concentrated, and deposited into a woman’s uterus. After the preparation period, the IUI cycle-specific acupuncture regimen, as described below:

Menstrual period (about 1-5 days) => follicular phase (including 1-14 days of menstruation) => trigger ovulation period => before IUI => one week after IUI.

3. Acupuncture program for IVF treatment cycle

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the gold standard infertility medicine and the most effective fertility treatment under Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), IVF treatment offers the highest success rate and fastest time to pregnancy.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)For patients undergoing IVF, acupuncture treatment prior to egg retrieval is designed to balance your hormones and increase nutrient blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Pre-transplant treatment aims to focus on and improve the health of the ovaries by producing as many eggs as possible. In addition to improving the quality of eggs and ovaries, acupuncture also helps the lining of the uterus. After the preceding preparation period, the IVF cycle-specific acupuncture protocol is described below:

3A. Stimulation Phase: Weekly or even twice-weekly acupuncture during ovulation can promote healthy egg growth as ovulation is stimulated. Because this phase can vary in length, it is important to monitor and change acupuncture treatment as needed.

3B. Egg retrieval: Most acupuncture therapists will recommend treatment 1 to 2 days before egg retrieval. Acupuncture at this stage of the cycle can help the eggs fully mature to ensure they are at the correct stage and size for retrieval.

3C. After Removal: An acupuncture session between removal and embryo transfer can help relax the uterus and increase circulation to the lining of the uterus, as well as help relieve discomfort from cramps or other side effects of removal.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)3D. Post-embryo transfer: One or two acupuncture treatments immediately after transferring a fertilized egg or embryo into the uterus can improve the chances of a successful pregnancy. One treatment can be given on the same day or the next day, with another treatment scheduled three or four days later. Weekly acupuncture throughout the first trimester can help support and promote an ongoing healthy pregnancy.

You will participate in weekly acupuncture or herbal treatments, encouraged by acupuncture or online counseling or medical hypnosis to strengthen your body’s ability to heal. Depending on your unique situation and how long you have had infertility, treatment can take 3 to 6 months, with most women becoming pregnant after 3-4 months of conditioning.

The success of your trip with us depends largely on your ability to give yourself love and compassion. We encourage you to take care of yourself as gently as you would your future baby.
